Patna: In a major crackdown on organized crime, Bihar authorities have seized properties worth crores belonging to notorious mafia don Chunnu Thakur. Long on the radar of law enforcement, Thakur has once again made headlines—this time for the illegal accumulation of wealth. The court has approved the seizure of his properties, marking a significant step in curbing his criminal empire.
Who is Chunnu Thakur?
Chunnu Thakur is one of Bihar’s most infamous criminals, who quickly established fear and dominance in the region. His criminal portfolio includes land grabbing, extortion, illegal contracts, and running organized gangs. Police records indicate that Thakur faces numerous cases under serious charges such as murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, Arms Act violations, and forced extortion.
Building a Criminal Syndicate
Thakur not only strengthened his financial base through crime but also established an organized network that influenced land deals and government contracts. The locals, terrified by his dominance, often hesitated to file complaints against him. Despite repeated police actions, Thakur frequently returned to criminal activity after securing bail.
The 2005 Political Sensation
Thakur came into national focus in 2005 during a high-profile kidnapping case. Kislay Kaushal, a student of Delhi Public School in Patna, was abducted. During his visit to Bihar, then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee publicly addressed the incident at Gandhi Maidan, asking, “Where is my Kislay? Please bring him back.” Chunnu Thakur was named in connection with the kidnapping, carrying a bounty of three lakh rupees. He was eventually arrested at the Bihar-Nepal border in April 2005.
The recent property seizure marks another chapter in the ongoing effort to dismantle Thakur’s criminal empire and bring him fully under the law.
