Chandni Chowk Set for a Makeover as Rekha Gupta Government Plans Heritage Revival

New Delhi: The historic lanes of Old Delhi are set to get a major facelift as the Rekha Gupta-led Delhi government gears up for the planned redevelopment of Chandni Chowk. The initiative aims to restore the area’s lost glory and provide better facilities for residents and traders.

High-Level Meeting at Delhi Secretariat

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta convened a high-level meeting at the Delhi Secretariat to discuss the revival of Shahjahanabad and the planned redevelopment of Chandni Chowk. Key participants included Chandni Chowk MP Praveen Khandelwal, Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, senior officials from SRDC, PWD, Delhi Municipal Corporation, and Delhi Police.

During the meeting, it was agreed that the redevelopment of the walled city is crucial to restore its heritage and vibrancy.

Addressing Past Neglect

CM Rekha Gupta remarked that the previous government’s negligence had left the area in a deteriorated condition. MP Praveen Khandelwal added that the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC) had failed in its mission because the earlier administration showed little interest in Old Delhi’s development. There is also a suggestion to rename SRDC to signify a fresh start.

Heritage-Focused Redevelopment

Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood emphasized the importance of engaging heritage conservation experts to restore the historic character of Chandni Chowk. He added that commercial activities in heritage buildings must be strictly regulated to preserve the area’s historical integrity. CM Rekha Gupta assured that her government is fully committed to reviving the glory of the walled city.

Key Challenges to Address

Experts point out that successful redevelopment will require:

  • Upgrading the sewer system to prevent recurring waterlogging
  • Improving traffic management and enforcing stricter rules
  • Removing encroachments
  • Shifting overhead electrical lines underground
  • Developing adequate parking
  • Enhancing security and waste management systems

While the previous government had invested in certain initiatives, the area’s condition soon deteriorated again. The new plan aims to ensure long-term sustainability while bringing back the historic charm of Chandni Chowk.
